This approach ensures gifts are used as intended while supporting long term, meaningful impact for students, faculty, and the broader university community. We ensure this through clear goal‑setting, ongoing coordination with campus partners, and consistent oversight throughout the life of each gift.

The MSU Foundation partners with faculty by identifying individuals, corporations, and foundations whose interests align with their teaching, research, and outreach priorities. Using prospect research, giving history, and institutional knowledge, the Foundation pinpoints potential donors, facilitates introductions, and helps translate faculty work into compelling philanthropic opportunities. Once a good match is found, Foundation staff guide cultivation, manage proposal development, and support stewardship so faculty can focus on their academic work while still benefiting from meaningful, strategic donor relationships.

Faculty are encouraged to engage the MSU Foundation early—ideally when an idea is forming—and definitely before reaching out to potential donors or funders. Early involvement allows the Foundation to help assess funding strategies, identify appropriate prospects, coordinate outreach, and ensure alignment with university priorities while avoiding duplication of effort. The Foundation can also support proposal development, donor conversations, and long term relationship building throughout the life of a project.

Before meeting with a foundation officer, faculty should be prepared to briefly describe their project or idea, including its purpose, goals, and anticipated impact. It is helpful to have a general sense of the funding need (range or estimate), a rough timeline, and how the project aligns with MSU’s mission or strategic priorities. Faculty should also be ready to share any known connections to potential donors or funders and note whether similar funding has been received before. Materials do not need to be final—early conversations are encouraged and meant to help refine next steps.

For requests greater than $10,000 to a private foundation, please email Heather Andrews with the name of the charitable organization, proposed budget, amount requested, and a copy of the proposal. This step helps the MSU Foundation maintain coordinated communication and ensure that efforts are aligned and not overlapping with other submissions.

• Avoid Assumptions: Don’t assume the reviewer shares your background. Walk them through your project clearly and concisely.
• Explain the Budget: Justify all budget items in your narrative. For example, describe the role and impact of any graduate assistants you’re requesting.
